AdvCal: December 30 [The End]

Well that was fun wasnt it?

1. "Summertime Clothes" by Animal Collective" [mp3]

[Not going to ask about this music video...]

How could I not put Animal Collective at the top of this list, they were just amazing this year, I dont know how I ever lived without this band. Summertimes Clothes is fantastic, the lyrics make it. Ill just let the song speak for itself really

"My Girls" by Animal Collective

Do I even need to say anything about My Girls? Its friggin My Girls, enjoy it.

Irene...

"Irene" by Caribou [mp3]

A song that used to be a huge favourite of mine, probably always will be, truely beautiful... Caribou is a genius.

///////////////////////////////

On an unrelated note, Im doing a 26cm by 20cm pointilism picture of this image:

RECTANGLE HAIR???

I think so.

Found it scrounging around google for some neato 60s hairstyles, this might take the cake.

12.29.2009

How do you feel when you can't feel nothing?

"Through The Hosiery" by Crystal Castles [mp3]

////////////////////////////////

Alice Glass is a hero. The spunky short haired singer from Crystal Castles is one of my favourite celebraties ever.

I fell in love with her the moment I first saw her. Complete girl crush.

And after reading THIS INTERVIEW with her I just reassured my love for her even more. Shes such an interesting person and no one can beat her sense of style.

...I must have come out of the womb wearing Converse.I just wear them until they rip and become sandals. I like the white ones when they get that awesome brown shade...

She is a complete fashion icon for me. Pencil skirts and cardigans on stage? What a legend. I love everything about her look.

Really debating getting a haircut like hers as well haha. Short hair is so hot

All my concert experiances with Crystal Castles have been pretty iffy... The first they were on the line up for the music festival here and the next day I checked it and they had cancelled or something. The second time I was VERY excited, we waited possibly over an hour standing in the mud for them to come out, but their flight was very late and their equipement never arrived. I still enjoyed their 20 minute set, even though Alice Glass' mic was cut out for a lot of it. Shes crazy though I love her.

I tried very hard to touch her through this sea of hands:

[Photo taken by my friend from Osheaga]

But no luck :(

Maybe one day I will see them live again, for a full set this time!!

2. "Ready, Able" by Grizzly Bear [mp3]

The first time I hear this song was when I watched this video, and it is no doubt my favourite music video to date. I cant get enough of it, Ive watched it so many times its spectacular, I dont even want to know how long it took to make. Ready, Able is also one of the most beautiful songs Ive ever heard, its haunting. I dont really know what to say about it its too good.

"Two Weeks" by Grizzly Bear

[Okay this is so creepy wtf.]

Definetly the most light hearted track off Veckatimest. Two Weeks its catchy and amazing. Lifts up my spirits every time I hear it.

AdvCal: December 28

3. "Deadbeat Summer" by Neon Indian [mp3]

Umm.. pretty much impossible to pick a track from Neon Indian because really, theyre all amazing and I pretty much hold them all in the same standing. So yeah I guess we'll go with Deadbeat Summer because its the first I heard from them, it was also the anthem of summer, but really you need to check out all of Psychic Chasms. So yes weve got that old school feel that is so distinct to Neon Indian.

4. "Bournemouth" by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs [mp3]

BOURNEMOUTH!!!
So my mom comes back form Ireland with one of those awesome MixMag magazines, and apparently all music mags in the UK coem with a free CD and on this sampler mix CD was about 1min 30sec of this amazing song called Bournemouth, so after finding about that you can find any mp3 you wan off mp3 blogs I went on the hunt for the full track, and finally found it. And its amazing. You NEED to turn it up loud and you NEED a subwoofer. The bass is ridiculous. I love this song too much. If youre a huge fan of bass like me you need this song.

6. "Sleepy Head" by Passion Pit

Okay okay, so we all know about Sleepy Head and we never hear enough about Passion Pit, but I really did love this song. i get a lot of my music off of commercials and when I heard like like pretty much a year ago it was a must have. Though his vocals do annoy most, and I admit it takes a little warming up to, it really is amazing, love this track :) What an incredible music video to go along with it as well.

Wonderful Christmas Time

So sitting in the car a few days back listening to Neon Indian my mom starts saying something about Paul McCartney and a Christmas song and not like Im ever really listening to her right? But then later on that night Im listening to the radio, which of course is only playing christmas music, and I hear soemthing that sounds VERY familiar to Neon Indian's distinct sound

Of course it was none other than the 1979

Also heres a little bit of Fake Blood:
"Ready For The Weekend (Fake Blood Remix)" by Calvin Harris [mp3]

Avatar

Holy hell

just got back from seeing Avatar and Im going to go as far as to say it was one of the best movies I ever saw.

I mean straight up, HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO MAKE THIS THING??? They just made up like so many new species of plants and animals and I cant even begint o consider how much time and effort was put into this.
Heres a little video I found called The Science of Pandora
And accoring to the The Full Interview [VERY Good interview.] they started to talk about this in 2005. Planning took 2 years :|

I LOVED THE SETTING. I couldnt stop freaking out at every little thing the whole movie it was just the coolest thing I had ever seen! Like jesus christ every little detail was amazing I was so entranced and fanscinated the whole time, just completly absorbed into this world that I had been created.

Right off the bat, I had no idea what this thing was about, other than that is was 3D and 3 hours long. But I knew it was a must see.

So I had never seen a movie in 3D, other than a crappy documentary about sea life like 6 years ago so I was very very excited just for the 3D aspect of it, and really it was insane. I kept feeling like I was able to look around things though I knew I couldnt, it didnt take as long to get used to as I thought it would. Kept taking the glasses off to try and see how the magic of 3D worked haha, pretty weird. My friends were all dizzy for some reason, surprised I wasnt. Felt like I was right there was pretty great.

[Side Note: Like how 3D glasses now look like wayfarers, kids like to pop out the lenses and wear em around these days as well]

The whole mix of CG and real life was craziness, was left conflicted what was real and what wasnt. Apparently he waited til "performance capture" was good enough until they even started doing it. Just AMAZING. Wow. Come on technology is just ridiculous these days.

So just the best movie ever wow, you will not be dissapointed theres just too many things to like within it. Go see it now seriously.

Oh yeah, I saw New Moon as well earlier in the day [it was cheap day at the theater]. What a piece of crap, especially after seeing friggin Avatar, good soundtrack though:

-"Slow Life" by Grizzly Bear [mp3]
-"Shooting The Moon" by OK Go [mp3]
-"Rosyln" by Bon Iver & St. Vincent [mp3]

9. "Mary jane feat. Mr Evil & Mapei" by Major Lazer [mp3]

Hello Mary Jane, I can't get you off my brain... I cant even tell you how many times I found myself annoying my friends with this catchy line. A solid song with a solid beat, very fun and danceable.
Another fantastic hit by them:
"Pon de Floor (feat. Vybz Kartel)" by Major Lazer
[Warning this video is... shocking?] Hilarious though.

Fun times seeing those guys live haha

One day....

were gonna live in paris.

"Paris" by Friendly Fires [mp3]

///////////////////

Been thinking about the future a lot lately, its comming around that time where Im supposed to be getting those applications for universitys in...

fun.

So its been a little hectic and stressful. You know what sucks about going into arts? Portfolios. Dont want to make them, just want to slack off. Jesus, look at me up at 4am sewing... So glad were on Christmas Break here...

So my numero uno choice for university is Ryerson

It is in Toronto and I am hopefully going for 'fashion design'. Its special to me because its a university course not college. Really I'm hardly even considering anything else. Really hoping to get in here...

[Drove right by the CN Tower last night, it was spectacular.]

A big factor in choosing a universtiy was that it had to be in a big city [Toronto/Montreal]. Sick of Ottawa, sick of how no bands come here, sick of how the buildings have a height limit [wtf.]. I need a change of pace.

So been sewing some things and drawing some drawings up, hopefully Ill get 'em all scanned up so I can post them here.

Excited for the futur, how about you?

12.21.2009

Let Me Begin

So being a huge Animal Collective fan I was of course very excited to hear that they were going to be releasing 5 new tracks for the "Fall To Be Kind EP".

I know Im behind the times just posting about it now, but I was giving it a thorough listen okay haha, but I really do enjoy it, in paticular these 3 tracks:
"I Think I Can" [mp3]
"What Would I Want? Sky"
"Graze"

I love how they all start off so beautifully and then change at the end. They definetly captured their most experimental side again, I was a little worried how itd turn out after they peaked with MPP. I feel like the songs fill up the room with sound, like they have built in surround sound. Its great. So definetly give it a listen if you already haven't, completly worth it.

10. "Animal" by Miike Snow [mp3]
Apparently I found 2 music videos...? Didnt expect the singer to look like that either haha.

This is just a solid song, good in every way haha. So apparently EVERY remix I have heard of Animal is damn amazing, really any remix I have found of a Miike Snow track seems to be amazing. I dont get it! But heres all the remixes of Animal that I have, all great:

-Fake Blood Remix
-Peter Bjorn and John Remix
[Since when do they even remix?]
-Punks Jump Up Remix

Apparently you can check them all out here, and even download a couple.

Another track from Miike Snow that I found very beautiful this year was this:
"Silvia" by Miike Snow

The Twelfth Hour

So today my family decided to do a one day trip to Toronto for some Christmas fun, by car... its 4 hours away from here... So I'm a little dead. But I realised a lot of my music is based on disco...
Which is awesome.
But I think my most disco related item as of yet would be a giant 1 hour mix by The Twelves who do fantastic remixes, my favourites include:

-"Get Lucky (The Twelves Remix)" by New Young Pony Club
-"Help Im Alive (The Twelves Remix)" by Metric

Phoenix with Holy Fuck in Montreal December 6

So Sunday night I was 2 hours away in Montreal at the Phoenix show with 4 friends of mine... heres the crew:

[Me]

[Christine, Erica, Avery, Hannah]

It was held at Montreal's Métropolis, same venue where I saw the Crookers & Major Lazer show so it was good to be back.

Anyways...

So we went, not even having tickets for this sold out show [something I kept a secret], but it was all good! Because they had released 30 more tickets an hour before the doors opened and my pops was the first in line :D And when we got there at 6:30 my parents also decided that they didnt want to see a movie, and that Phoenix was good music, and that they were hip enough to come to the concert too... But they sat at the balcony, being probably the oldest people there in their late 50's...

So anyways, we saved our spots up at the front, with only like one row of people in front of us [you gotta be up close.] and then Holy Fuck came on at 8, they were FANTASTIC. Loved it.

[This dude had some funky moves and some crazy instruments.]

Their sound was amazing and a very moving performance, I would love to see them again sometime I loved their music.

So after their 30min set waited we waited another 30min for Phoenix...

So they opened with Lisztomania, and played all the tracks off of their new album Wolfgang Armadeus Phoenix not to mention some other favourites such as Run Run Run and If I Ever Feel Better, there were only 2 songs I didnt recognize... But of course they closed the show with their big hit 1901 with some crowd surfing as well, my pal grabbed his ass.

[So I love this guy, Thomas Mars. Look at him hes just so awkward looking...He kept coming into the crowd like this and since we were right up front he was directly infront of me at one point, so I stood awkwardly with my camre infront of his face, but it was so awkward that I just paniced and stroked his face like all the other people around me haha, this time he was far enough to take a picture, but still close enough that I held his hand haha. He was amazing.]

[Straight up, this guy was pretty frightening. Creepiest stare Ive ever seen.]

[And this bro definetly looks a little like Amir from College Humor, but it may just be the glasses...]

Over all it was spectacular show, they were really great live I loved them. It was great to hear some of my favourites song played live. Next time theyre player anywhere near me I am so there.

And of course Erica came home with the set list, she gets all the swag.
Also I think we witnessed some guy get like his arm broken... or something over a drumstick while the other guy just bolted off after killing the other guy for it haha

And even after coming home at 1:30am and waking up for school at about 6:45am,I was like the most well rested I'd ever felt that Monday haha.
Also... my cameras a piece of crap. Cant wait til I get a new one...
